Is there anyone you know who does not enjoy going to see a great movie? When I was a child, being able to see a movie was a rare and amazing treat. In fact, some people are more interested in the action behind the scenes than in the finished product. This is where films schools come in. They provide the opportunity to learn the basics of filming a movie, but not just that; rather all the rest of the details and work that goes into making a picture.

Obviously, there is much more to making a movie than simply running the camera. You will also need to know about screenwriting, set design, budgeting, lighting, casting, sound, post production, makeup and special effects. We have all learned about the significance of these parts of filmmaking from the Academy Awards programs. While we may not remember the names of the people wining these awards, it is nevertheless apparent that these jobs and skills are equally integral to the development of a successful film.

While some people might aspire to go to Hollywood or NYC to study for a film degree, there are really programs for film making all over the US. At Full Sail University in Florida you can earn a bachelor’s degree in about 20 months. Florida State University also has a film program. Of course, California does boast four of the best film schools in the country. All that education and great weather is a good incentive for many to relocate. On the other hand, New York University is one of the most discriminating film schools in the world and has one of the largest filmmaking facilities on the East Coast. Famous alums include Spike Lee, M. Night Shyamalan, and Roman Cappola.

Down in Texas, the University of Texas film Institute boasts a fairly new program, founded in 2003, where they are committed to providing a hands-on education using the latest film technologies. Ohio University offers ambitious students the ability to explore their interests through individualized programs of study. In this case, students must rank in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class in order to even be considered for admission.

There are many careers available to aspiring film school graduates, including: director, cinematographer, set designer, actor, or screen writer. One of the advantages to attending film school is having the opportunity to explore all aspects of the craft, and in so doing you may find that you are excited and passionate about any number of areas. The amazing technology available today assures that filmmaking will be a fascinating career for years to come.
